History: WikiMoon

Personality:
Ami is a very intelligent, but very shy person; however her shyness can sometimes be misconstrued as snobbery by people who do not know her. While she tries to pretend she doesn't care what other people say about her, in truth, it hurts her more than she will admit, particularly when they tease her for her superior intelligence and study habits. There have been a number of times when Ami has broken down into tears when she thinks no one is looking following comments about her grades and her apparent lack of personality outside studying.

As she has been isolated by other students throughout her schooling because of her intelligence, Ami prefers to remain alone, and has a difficult time making friends. Her lack of confidence in herself prevents her from actively seeking friends, and even when Usagi befriends her, Ami is uncertain as to why Usagi likes her. While her confidence has increased somewhat since she has met Usagi, she still shows a level of insecurity about her abilities and herself as a person, which surface particularly during times when she feels useless or helpless.
Unlike her four friends, Ami is shy around boys she likes (usually the intelligent type), and blushes while talking to them or when she is teased about them by her friends.

Despite her shy nature, Ami is a very loving and caring person, which can be seen very early on in her appearance in the series through her open display of affection to Luna when they first meet. It can also be seen in the positive way that she helps and interacts with her friends on a daily basis, while fighting for their lives, and her reaction when a friend has been badly hurt or is dying / dies. Where she cries in private over hurtful comments, she will cry openly at the sight of a friend who is injured or who has died /disappeared.

She is fiercely loyal to her friends, and if they are in trouble, will not give up trying to save them. Ami often shows steely resolve and will not hesitate to jump in front of an attack aimed at her friends, especially Usagi / Sailor Moon, even with the knowledge that it could kill her. Ami takes her role as a guardian very seriously, and is willing to give up her life to protect Usagi.

Ami sometimes feels insecure about her abilities as Sailor Mercury, particularly when faced with a difficult opponent or when she needs to be ‘rescued’ by Sailor Moon or any of the other senshi, as she feels that she is not physically strong and is putting others in danger. However because of her high level of intelligence, the senshi often turn to her for help to analyse the situation or the enemy. Despite fighting monsters and aliens from different planets, Ami does not like confrontations, and feels uncomfortable when the other senshi argue with each other, even if it is in jest.

She is seen as the responsible and sensible member of her friendship group (being the other senshi; Usagi, Rei, Minako and Makoto), and is the strategist when it comes to fighting. The senshi rely on her to figure out what is happening around them and determine how to defeat an enemy, and during their normal lives, ask for her help with homework and exams. Ami often berates Usagi and Minako for their lack of dedication to their school work or for failing to study for tests. She is the one who pushes them to study for their high school entrance exams. Even though she berates them, she still helps them if they are having trouble with school work.

Ami is extremely dedicated to maintaining the top grade in her school, and gets surprisingly competitive if she finds another student has bested her in grades (which is extremely rare but does happen). When this happens she dedicates all her free time to studying even harder, and will obsessively check her grades against her ‘opponent’s’ when they are released, and will not stop until she achieves the top grade. However since becoming a senshi and making friends, Ami is more relaxed and has learnt how to have fun and not focus solely on her studies.

Sometimes Ami feels that her duties as a sailor senshi are interrupting her study and will impact negatively on her dream to be a doctor. In these cases, she reminds herself that her first and most important role is as protector to the Moon Princess (Usagi).

While Ami spends most of her free time studying, she also enjoys reading romance novels (although she is embarrassed to admit it), swimming, listening to pop music, playing chess and has an appreciation for the arts (as her father is an artist).

Strengths:
Non-magical strengths / abilities:
Ami’s brain is her biggest strength. Ami is a genius with an estimated IQ of 300, and is not only the top of her class, but also the top student in Japan for her age bracket. She is extremely studious, and likes to research her enemies before attacking. She can quickly analyse and deduce things while both in civilian and Sailor Mercury form – the speed at which she is able to arrive at accurate conclusions (sometimes just seconds) often wows her friends.

Ami also has some martial arts abilities but they are not one of her strong features. She is able to kick, punch, jump and dodge, and is relatively athletic. She also has decent stamina and is able to run relatively fast and for extended distances. When she is Super Sailor Mercury, her martial arts ability is improved.

Ami also can also sense strong power (both positive and negative), when it’s close by while in civilian and Mercury form, although she may not be able to identify its location unless using her miniature supercomputer and Mercury goggles.

Under serious circumstances, she can also telepathically hear / feel the other senshi, particularly Usagi when she is in trouble, hurt, or requesting power from the senshi.

She’s also an excellent chess player and swimmer, and a computer whiz.

Magical strengths / abilities:
Ami can transform into her Super Sailor Mercury (Mercupony?) form with her Mercury Crystal. It is a heart shaped crystal that was bestowed on her by the Guardian of Mercury.

Ami has a number of water-based attacks when she is in her Super Sailor Mercury form, as follows:

Mercury Aqua Mist: This is a defensive attack in which Mercury creates a thick fog, reducing the overall visibility of the immediate area (renamed in the second manga release - previously Shabon Spray).

Hyperspatial Sphere Generate: This is a defensive attack. It creates a shield that dimensionally seals off a place from its surroundings. She is able to do so by using "time axis calculations", which suggests that the power not only puts the affected area into a sort of subspace, but into a sort of chronolock as well. She must have her Mercury goggles on in order to do the attack. For MLJ, I would change this to just create a protective sphere around her / those close to her to block or protect from an attack. This can only been done once per fight, as it takes a large amount of energy to generate.

Shine Aqua Illusion: An offensive attack in which droplets of water spiral around Mercury, who gathers them in her hands and then throws the icy water at an enemy to damage them.

Shine Snow Illusion: A defensive attack in which snow swirls around Mercury, obscuring vision and dropping the temperature significantly.

Mercury Aqua Rhapsody: This is one of Mercury’s strongest attacks in which her liquid Mercury Lyre appears. As she plays it, jets of water shoot out from it, blasting the enemy.

Mercury Aqua Mirage: This attack consists of Mercury summoning a globe of water which then branches off into a number of liquid streams, targeting the enemy. When they hit, the enemy is engulfed in a sphere of water which bursts, destroying them. For MLJ, this ability will be cut right back to just causing serious damage to the target.

Super Sailor Mercury items:
Mercury Lyre: Ami can summon the liquid lyre while in Super Sailor Mercury form. The lyre has a will of its own and can communicate with Sailor Mercury (based on the manga, it’s assumed this is telepathic communication.)

Headset: The headset's purpose is never explained, but it has a microphone that connects to her left earring.

Mercury Goggles (also called the Virtual Reality Visor): A transparent blue visor used by Sailor Mercury. She can make it appear or disappear by touching one of her earrings, and she uses this item to scan and make analysis of enemies, terrain and phenomena in battle, as well as make calculations. These works in sync with her miniature super computer.

Mini Super Computer: A compact computer that Sailor Mercury uses to scan surroundings and analyze data, proving very useful in battle. It gives Sailor Mercury the ability to analyze and solve problems, and can find weak points in enemies. This works in sync with her Mercury goggles / VR visor.

Weaknesses:
Insecure: Despite her genius level intelligence, Ami often feels insecure about her place in the Sailor Senshi, believing herself to be weaker than the others and sometimes a burden. Enemies have used her insecurities in the past to warp her thinking and prevent her from being able to fight effectively.

Shy: Ami’s shyness can cause problems when it comes to making friends. Her shyness combined with her intelligence can be misconstrued by people as acting like a snob, causing people to make fun of / say nasty things about her. Ami finds this really upsetting, but doesn’t have the confidence to correct or confront them. Instead she bottles her feelings up inside. Until Usagi came along, Ami didn’t appear to have any friends at school.

Jealous: This isn’t a huge weakness; however there have been a couple times where Ami has shown that she’s a little jealous of Usagi’s relationship with Mamoru and Chibi-Usa, and her happy family life. Coming from a ‘broken family’, and where her mother is too busy working to spend a lot of time with her, Ami appears to yearn for the kind of loving family life and relationship that Usagi has.

Loyalty and duty: While this is usually seen as a strength, it’s also a weakness. Ami will willingly die if it’s necessary to keep her friends alive, and an enemy can exploit this loyalty.

Possessions:
Reading glasses: Ami usually wears glasses while studying. She’ll have them when she arrives.

Mercury Crystal: A heart shaped crystal that enables her to transform into Super Sailor Mercury. This will come with her, embedded in a heart shaped locket around her neck.

Communicator: The shape of a blue watch with a crescent moon inside a gold star engraved on it, and it enables her to communicate with the other senshi as well as the two guardian cats, Artemis and Luna.

Sailor-style school girl outfit: Ami will be wearing her school sailor fuku on arrival to Ponyville (looks like this)

Pony/Animal Type: Unicorn
Cutie Mark: Dark blue Mercury Planetary symbol (☿except the circle is a heart shape)

SAMPLES
First Person:
I must admit that writing on a scroll with a feather pen and a bottle of ink seems to be a very archaic and a tad messy form of communications, but there’s a sense of nostalgia in it.

I wonder if this is how William Shakespeare used to write all his plays?

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”

The concept behind sending one of these to another person is quite fascinating – the transfer of physical matter, through a process one would assume would burn the paper to ash, from one point to another without traversing the physical space between, and yet it arriving undamaged is, to be honest, quite inconceivable.

I’d love to do more research into how this type of communications was introduced. Would anyone happen to have any books available for me to borrow on the subject?

Third Person:
The slow ticking of a small desk clock echoed loudly throughout the quiet house. Other, softer sounds intermingled with the ticking - the sound of a pencil scribbling away methodically, a small rustle as a page was turned. Blue black hair flopped into Ami's eyes and she absently brushed it away, concentrating on the problem before her. She paused, the tip of the pencil hovering just above the page, and studied the question, her dark blue eyes noting examples given higher up. A tiny frown creased her brow, but quickly smoothed as her eyes lit up, the solution coming to her. With carefully executed strokes she wrote down the answer, double checking it just to be sure. A pile of books were stacked neatly on the desk to one side in order of subject. She had just finished her English homework and was working on her favourite subject – maths. She enjoyed the logical element of maths. Everything was defined, everything had a method and all problems could be solved if you knew the right method to use.

The shadows lengthened in the room as Ami continued to note down her answers, and eventually she flicked on the desk lamp, flinching slightly as the bright light stung her eyes. She was alone in the house, but Ami was used to her mother working long hours and coming home late. She had prepared dinner some time ago now, and had left it in the fridge for her mother to reheat when she returned.

Just as she was finishing the last problem on the page, she heard a loud beeping coming from the blue watch resting on her bedside table. Reaching over to pick it up, she opened the face, which had a small crescent moon inside a star engraved in gold on it. An image of a girl with tousled long blond hair and blue eyes appeared, looking panicked and on the verge of tears. "Guys, I need you at the park near the arcade now!" Ami heard Usagi blurt out between heavy breaths.

She pressed a button on the side of the watch. "I'm coming Sailor Moon," she responded, quickly grabbing her keys from her bedside table. She ran down the stairs, stopping only to write a quick note to her mother and lock the front door before she was off, running down the street. People looked at her curiously as she ran, and she felt her cheeks redden slightly, wondering what they were thinking. As she approached the park Sailor Moon had mentioned, she slowed, hearing a shriek that sounded very much like Sailor Moon trying to dodge something. Ami glanced around quickly before ducking behind a large tree, making sure no one had seen her. Her Mercury Crystal glowed as she held it up and called out "Mercury Crystal Power Make-Up!".

Silver blue liquid tendrils flew out from her Mercury Crystal and, using swirling motions with her arms, she wrapped them around her body to form her white leotard, white gloves and blue, knee-high boots. A following explosion of bubbles around her body formed the rest of her sailor fuku – a blue sailor collar and skirt, and large light blue bows on the chest of her leotard and the back of her skirt. A gold band with a sapphire in the centre appeared on her forehead, while three sapphire studs adorned each ear. A blue choker with a gold star in the centre finished the outfit.

Stepping out from the shadow of the tree, Super Sailor Mercury assessed the situation before her. A bright orange light in the corner of her vision signalled Sailor Mars' arrival to the battle as she let off a fireball, while slightly to the left Mercury could see the darkened outline of Sailor Moon being held ten metres in the air by one of seven seemingly identical monsters. Producing her Mercury Lyre from thin air, Mercury began to play. As she strummed the instrument lovingly, strong jets of icy water shot out from the strings to form one large one, hitting and stunning the monster that held the squirming Sailor Moon captive. It let her go and she fell, landing ungracefully on the ground before using her Moon Gorgeous Meditation to vaporise the seven monsters. However the smile that had begun to spread across Mercury's face at the seemingly easy defeat of their enemy quickly turned to horror as the identical monsters reappeared.
